Equine Nebulisers / Horse Respiratory Treatment Equipment

Inhalator 1In recent years there has been a considerable increase in illnesses of the respiratory tract in horses which more and more frequently reveal chronic changes in the  lungs. Reasons for this by  veterinary surgeons are , in order of importance:

  • 1. Feeding with poor quality or mouldy hay and bedding on sub standard straw for long periods of time.
  • 2.Putting the horse back into work  before it has had time to fully recover from the infection .
  • 3.Influenza vaccinations at irregular intervals. By demanding too much of the horse too early after vaccination, the body does not build up sufficient immune protection.
  • 4. Transporting the horses to events , leads to repeated infection by other strains of influenza virus that the immunity acquired previously become ineffective .
  • 5. Horses are exercised too little and are often  stabled in inadequately ventilated boxes. The horses are not toughened up due to lack of exercise and  changes of air .

Conditions of the respiratory tract can result in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the horse particularly if the external  symptoms are unclear and are not taken seriously enough. You may not  hear a cough for several days  as a lung condition may not be the  source of the problem .On the contrary, the horse feels perfectly healthy , as there is no pain conduction system between the lung and the brain.

Drugs administered to treat this condition are not sufficiently  successful. Aerosol treatment is the only natural and economical form of  treatment.

The Inhalator is once again one step  ahead thanks to its decades of experience in this field.

Summarising his experiences with the inhalator as  long ago as the veterinary surgeons conference in Hamburg in October vet Helmut Ende said :" with the Kegel Inhalator there is now a safe technically advanced and at the same time an amazingly simple method for applying inhalants to horses."

Costly  scientific tests and the ongoing further development of the Inhalers resulted in the ultrasonic nebuliser the KU- 2000 .This ensures that the drugs are transported into the smallest bronchioles.

The KU - 2000 is particularly effective at atomising drugs, treating the upper and lower  respiratory tracts  simultaneously.

the Ku -2000 was developed for use with the breathing mask. Provided that there is a good seal  on the upper edge, the valve system on the mask means that there is no need  for an additional blower on the nebuliser. The adjustable fresh air inlet on the inhalation valve of the breathing mask allows infinitely variable regulation of fresh air to nebulised air intake. This fresh air regulation is of great value in all those cases where horses  do not breathe deeply enough for a sufficient uptake of the nebulised substance out of the container.

The horse breathes in the aerosol itself with the aid of the breathing mask. this is the most economical way of taking drugs.

The valve system on the base of the mask prevents the nebulised substance from being exhaled back into the  ultrasonic nebuliser.

\The KU - 2000 cubicle from its use in practice it has been demonstrated that the effectiveness of the aerosol , produced by ultrasonic  nebulising with a high performance instrument, is unmatched by any other system.

Using a gamma camera, photographs of the lungs in  horses have been taken in the USA. These have proved that the drugs nebulised with the KU-200 reach the smallest respiratory passages.

Detailed references to the test results were made during a conference of veterinary surgeons at Equitana in Essen.

For the treatment of the upper respiratory tract with Essential oils .

Essential  oils are inhaled vaporized in hot water.
recommended dose:
about 2 teaspoons to 1 litre of hot water
time of treatment: about 10 - 15 minutes, if possible twice a day
In threatened stocks not only sick  horses should inhale at least once a day but also horses which could fall ill.
The use of essential  oils improves the natural physiological state of the mucous membranes - to prevent them drying out and to allow the natural defence mechanism of the respiratory tract to play their part. By a better drainage of secretion, infective agents are brought up and spasmodic conditions relax. By using vaporized essential oils help is given in restoring the physiological state of the mucosa. This allows the defence mechanisms of the respiratory tract to come back into play with the production of natural non-viscous mucus, which can be beaten by cilia - leading to the restoration of the respiratory mucosa, permitting more effective gaseous exchange to take place. Mucous plugs are made looser, the bronchi are dilated and a general sedative and anti-phlogistic effect can be noticed. The power of resistance of the organism improves.
Even in healthy horses an improvement in performance and decrease in the range of fatigue has been noticed following the use of inhalation prior to exertion.

made of essential oils has shown promising responses for years now:
Peppermint Oil 15%
Mountain Pine Oil 20%
Eucalyptus Oil 10%
Fennel Oil 30%
Pine Oil 20%
Camomile Oil 5%
We produce a  "Saunaoil"  which corresponds to this composition.

Vaporized medicines for the treatment of the lower respiratory tract

In chronic and allergic conditions, bronchio dilating and expectorant medicines may be administered diluted by a saline-camomile solution by means of the KEGEL-INHALATOR: This can only be effected by means of the "compressor - equipment" or the "ultrasonic-inhalator KU-2000." Our saline-camomile fluid is a saline solution combined with water-soluble essential oils with a high percentage of camomile, which can be nebulized. To realize the maximum benefits from such treatment and to maintain the improvement, it is essential to improve the environment - principally by ensuring that only moistured hay or haylage  is fed.
Animals at risk are especially sensitive to new influenza-infections. Consequently they have to be kept strictly separated from animals with acute cough. By attending to environmental factors and the application of vapour therapy, chronic respiratory symptoms can be drastically reduced, enabling horses to be ridden again and to perform their function for many years.

  • Inhalator 2
  • The KEGEL-INHALATOR MASK consists of:
  • a) durable plastic mask with adjustable headstall
    b) 2 outflow valves
    c) inhalation valve with hose connection
    d) inhalation valve for fresh air
    e) rubber ring as sealant for rim on upper part of mask
    f) flexible breathing hose with 2 connectors

1.) The rubber ring (e) should be pushed over the horse's mouth to above where the top of the mask will fit. For ponies and foals an additional ring-seal is necessary which has to precede ring (e).
2.) The mask (a) should then be put in place without connecting the breathing tube. Provided the horse finds that it can breathe without difficulty even the most sensitive horse does not seem to panic.
3.) The end of the breathing tube should then be connected to the inhalation cuff (c) on the mask - and the treatment begins.

    (price-list: package a)
Fill water-bucket with water. Add 2 teaspoons of oil. Cover bucket with lid, into which the narrow end of the breathing tube has been placed.
    (disadvantage: water cools down quickly.)

    (price-list: package b)
Fill Thermo Unit half full (or approx.1qt.) with water. Add two teaspoons of inhalation solution. Cover Thermo Unit with lid into which the narrow end of the breathing tube has been placed. Fasten with elastic belt.
    (advantage: constant temperature)

    Compressor equipment

    (price-list: package c)
Unscrew nebulizer, fill medicine into lower part and screw well again. Pile nebulizer on small connection of the breathing tube and insert in mounting-support at wall from above. (The thick nozzle prevents the slipping down) Upon that adjust air-hose which has been attached at one end of the air-hose connector of compressor - well tightly on nozzle at the bottom of nebulizer. By the operation of the compressor the medicine is nebulized at a size of droplets of 1-6 microns and consequently respirable. After using oily medicines the nebulizer has to be rinsed thoroughly.

    Ultrasonic equipment

    D) NEBULIZING OF MEDICINES WITH ULTRASONIC-NEBULIZER KU-2000 Fill medicine together with saline-camomile fluid or normal saline solution into beaker, altogether about 20-30 mls, insert beaker into Thermo Unit of KU-2000 which you filled before with contact-fluid up to 1/2 - 1 cm above lateral electrodes. Place lid on top with hose coupling lengthways to the appliance (Compare figure). The KU-2000 nebulizes about 4ml/min. This means that a great amount of atomized liquid with a corresponding high quota of tiniest particles are constantly available during nebulizing process.

equipmentThe KU-2000 was developed to be used with the oxygen mask. The valve system of this mask allows to use the KU-2000 without a ventilator, provided that the rubberized ring at the top end of the breathing mask is positioned as air-tight as possible. The fresh-air connection, which can be changed to different pressures, high or low, which is attached to the inhalatory valve (d) at the oxygen mask, permits to regulate the additional air-survey or to cut it down completely.

The medical practice has shown that the aerosol generated by means of the ultrasonic nebuliser is the most effective way to treat a horse with diseased lungs.
The droplet size produced is 0,5-6 microns and therefore provides for effective treatment of the upper and lower respiratory tracts.
The larger droplets from 3-6 microns coat the upper bronchi of the respiratory tract and only the smaller ones reach the bronchioles and alveoli.Anything smaller than 0.5 micron is exhaled, anything bigger than 6 microns deposits already in the tracheal region or in the nasal cavity.

  • Maintenance of the equipment is limited to cleaning according to instructions .Material and workmanship are Guaranteed to be free of defects. All parts and labour are included for a period of 6 months. This warranty also includes the ultrasonic transformer.
This warranty is limited to replacement or repair of defective parts, as long as there is no sign of tampering with the equipment. Opening of the apparatus voids the warranty.
  • The KEGEL- INHALATOR has proved to be very effective in treating BOVINE INFLlUENZA. Don't hesitate to call if you are interested in knowing more about it.
  • For the aerosol - therapy a thorough disinfection of nebulizer, mask and hose is extremely important. Fill a bucket with a disinfectant solution ,e.g. "Eqicin"-dilution (100 : 2) Place mask, flexible hose and nebulizer (of compressor) and if necessary rubber sealing ring into bucket. After the nebulizing chamber has been emptied fill it with this disinfectant solution and place the cover of the nebulizing chamber into the bucket as well. After some time rinse everything with tap water!
  • When treating one horse disinfection every three days will be sufficient. When the apparatus is used for more than one animal, disinfection of at least mask, hose and sealing ring are an absolute must before each change, if there are not enough masks for all horses.
  • The lung capacity of a horse is approximately five times that of a human being. Therefore, vaporizers and ultrasonic nebulizers in use for people are not adequate for the treatment of horses. The KEGEL - INHALATOR is the only one which was developed for the equine therapy and corresponds to the practical demands.
